Project Designer Glenda Cortes details a recently completed project for a commercial client.
This apartment community on the east side of Orlando sought a redesign of their main clubhouse and fitness center. Keeping in mind the building’s demographics and the fact that most of the tenants in the building are college students, this project leans contemporary in style with a focus on an organic/industrial look. The color scheme includes warmer neutrals and pops of teal, green and rust/orange.
The idea here is to enhance and update some of the existing architectural features, especially in the clubhouse, while providing a balance between function and aesthetics within budget. In the main lobby area of the clubhouse, the paint alone made a huge difference. The walls went from a darker taupe paint with traditional white molding, to a lighter warmer neutral paint and darker contrasting molding; so, the space looks brighter altogether.
We wanted to enhance some of the existing architectural features, which included closing some openings with the intention of defining the traffic path. We also sought to provide a sense of direction as you enter the space. This was accomplished by creating a pair of custom-built floorplan displays, and a custom reception desk. I would say these are two of my favorite features in this project because they combine both aesthetic appeal and function.
As you are drawn towards the pool view, all the different elements and materials come together to not only create a visual statement, but to also define two separate seating arrangements. The neutral paint provides a background for the contrast of the staggering light pendants that stand out, and tie in with the coffee tables’ geometric shape below. The coffee table is the focal point for the first seating arrangement, which is more of a lounge/waiting area.
On the other hand, some of the more organic shapes, such as the decorative wall décor on the wall insets, and the area rug’s pattern, help to create balance while at the same time guiding occupants towards the second seating arrangement—which is mostly used by the employees to meet with future tenants. In the lobby area, hallways, and fitness center, the pops of color repeat to create cohesiveness throughout the clubhouse.
The fitness center was expanded to provide more space for additional equipment, and we were involved with the finishes selections. The focal wall, shown in the fitness center picture, features the pops of colors mentioned above and different words are featured to encourage the users to keep working out!
Overall, the space went from dark and outdated to bright and updated. We also provided the necessary function for visitors and employees alike so that whomever walks into the space feels welcome and comfortable enough to call River Park apartments their new home!
